Research Interests

The goal of our research is to obtain an atomistic understanding of the elementary steps of surface reactions. We want to learn how and why the atoms and molecules on a surface move making such mystic things like surface catalysed chemistry happen, or how to make them move such that structures of nanometer scale can be produced. Such knowledge is the basis for a thorough understanding of heterogeneous catalysis and for new methods in materials processing. We use lasers to drive these reactions and laser spectroscopy to study the outcome.
Beyond that we are working on methods to use lasers to write structures into surfaces, in particular into organic monolayers, which then serve as chemical templates, and to modify the properties of layers of nanoparticles.

Collaborations

We contributed in the past a project to the Collaborative Research Centre 1242 "Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Condensed Matter in the Time Domain," where we were developing time-resolving two-colour IR pump-probe-spectroscopy.
We contribute also a project to the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 247 "Heterogeneous Oxidation Catalysis in the Liquid Phase" titled "In situ Vibrational Spectroscopy."

We also participate
in the Centre for Nano Integration Duisburg Essen (CENIDE).
